The inception of Inclusion, Inc. began in July of 1993 when growing frustration with the lack of supports available to people with severe disabilities prompted the need for a new look at an old system. The concept involves providing 24 hours of support, supervision and assistance to persons with disabilities so that they may live in a more individualized, immersive community setting. The goal for Inclusion, Inc. is to respect individual choices for where and how a person chooses to live, work and recreate. In turn, people are living in their own homes and getting the support they need in order to have the quality of life they deserve. Many of the people served are individuals traditionally offered services and supports in large institutional settings. Inclusion, Inc. has demonstrated that institutionalization is not necessary for people simply because, historically, their disability may have been deemed "too severe" for community based services. In short, the philosophical assumption of the project is that almost anyone can live and participate in the community if adequate supports are available.
Our MissionOur mission is to provide "Inclusion" for the people we serve. Normalization can be viewed as both a philosophy and a basis for action. As a philosophy, it means that persons with developmental disabilities participate in experiences that are typical or average to all individuals. This encompasses all aspects of daily life. It includes having meaningful work and leisure activities, using community facilities and exercising the same rights and privileges as any other citizen. As a basis for action, the principal of normalization demands that persons with developmental disabilities enjoy the full range of typical life conditions or experiences that society considers to be meaningful. Inclusion ensures that the provision of all supports and services will be guided by the principles of normalization. Inclusion will work toward public attitudinal change - by helping others in the community understand that individuals with disabilities are people first and have the same basic wants, needs and desires as anyone else. Secondly, Inclusion will stretch the limits of each persons potential by supporting them in the acquisition and utilization of functional skills that promote full community inclusion and lessen the likelihood of dependence on others.
